![]() ![]() ![]() Sometimes powerful, it is never harsh or ugly. ![]() It is often ethereal, but never dainty or frilly. The music of Messiaen tends to be very striking on first hearing. Certainly an analysis of the work emphasizing such considerations would be enlightening but in this analysis, examination of elements more directly musical will take precedence. The title refers to a Biblical passage from Revelations, Chapter Ten, in which an angel descends from Heaven and declares, 'There shall be time no longer.' Many aspects of the work, from the number of movements to individual chords, are explained by Messiaen on a mystical, spiritual, or religious level. The piece was composed in a prison camp it was scored for available instruments: violin, clarinet, cello, and piano. Quatuor pour la Fin du Temps ( Quartet for the End of Time) is an eight-movement work written by Olivier Messiaen and first performed in 1941. (It is hoped that the text alone will still be somewhat informative!) I have elected, at least for the time being, to omit musical examples here rather than engage in the time-consuming process of rescanning large portions of the score.
